5 Simple Self-Care Rituals to Nurture Your Energy This Winter

Winter in Norfolk has its own quiet beauty — the vast skies, the frost on the reed beds, the early darkness that wraps around us like a blanket. But it can also be a challenging time for our energy. The cold, the lack of sunlight, and the natural urge to hibernate can leave us feeling drained, flat, or disconnected from ourselves.

The good news is that winter is actually the perfect season for turning inward and tending to your wellbeing. Here are five simple rituals you can weave into your daily life to keep your energy nourished through the darker months.

1. Ground Yourself Each Morning

Before you check your phone, before you make your tea, before the day begins — take two minutes to ground yourself. Stand barefoot on your kitchen floor (or outside if you're brave enough in February). Close your eyes. Feel the solid earth beneath you. Imagine roots growing down from the soles of your feet, anchoring you deep into the ground.

This sounds simple, and it is. But grounding is one of the most powerful things you can do for your energy. It brings you into the present moment, calms the nervous system, and creates a stable foundation for whatever the day brings. In Reiki, we always begin with grounding — it's that fundamental.

2. Keep a Crystal by Your Bed

You don't need a vast collection of crystals to benefit from their energy. Just one, chosen with intention, can make a real difference to how you feel. For winter, I particularly recommend:

Citrine — a warm, sunny stone that lifts the spirits and brings optimism. Perfect for those grey February mornings.
Black tourmaline — deeply protective and grounding. Wonderful if you tend to absorb other people's energy.
Rose quartz — the stone of self-love. A gentle reminder to be kind to yourself when the world feels heavy.

Place your chosen crystal on your bedside table and hold it for a moment each morning and evening. Set an intention — even something as simple as "I choose peace today." You can learn more about working with crystals on my crystal healing page.

3. Take a Bath With Intention

A bath in winter is more than just getting warm. It can be a genuine healing ritual if you approach it with a little mindfulness. Add Epsom salts (magnesium is wonderful for tired muscles and frazzled nerves), light a candle, and set the intention that you're washing away anything that no longer serves you.

As you soak, breathe slowly and deeply. Imagine the warm water drawing out tension, worry, and stagnant energy. When you pull the plug, visualise it all draining away. It might sound a bit woo — but try it once and see how different you feel afterwards. There's a reason water has been used in cleansing rituals across every culture throughout history.

4. Write Three Things Down Each Evening

Gratitude journaling has become a bit of a buzzword, and I understand if you roll your eyes slightly. But there's something genuinely powerful about ending each day by writing down three things — they don't need to be profound. "The robin on the fence this morning." "A good cup of coffee." "My daughter made me laugh."

What this practice does is train your mind to notice the good. In winter, when everything can feel a bit grey and heavy, this simple habit shifts your focus towards the light that's already there. Keep a small notebook by your bed and spend two minutes on it before you sleep. Over time, you'll notice a real change in how you experience your days.

5. Give Yourself Permission to Receive

This might be the most important ritual of all, and it's the one most of us struggle with. We're so used to giving — to our families, our work, our communities — that we forget to receive. Winter is nature's season of rest and restoration. The trees aren't lazy when they drop their leaves; they're being wise. They're conserving their energy for the growth that's coming.

Give yourself permission to do the same. Book that healing session you've been thinking about. Say yes to help when it's offered. Take the nap. Read the book. Walk by the water without feeling guilty about the washing up.

Whether it's a Reiki session, a crystal facial, or simply an afternoon with no agenda — receiving is not selfish. It's essential.
